2016 Scholarship Essay Contest Topic

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) has been in existence since 1926. Of all The IAPMO Group’s core competencies, which division do you feel is making the greatest impact and why?

The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO), a worldwide organization of dedicated professionals striving to make our planet a safer and healthier place in which to live, will again sponsor an essay competition awarding scholarships to three young people.

Participants in this year’s contest will submit essays expressing their thoughts on “The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO) has been in existence since 1926. Of all The IAPMO Group’s core competencies, which division do you feel is making the greatest impact and why?”

PURPOSE
To acquaint the uninitiated with the crucial importance the plumbing industry plays in our everyday lives.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Must be a current high school senior; or enrolled or accepted as a full-time (12 credit hours) student in an accredited technical school, community college, trade school, four-year accredited college or university, or an apprentice program.

GENERAL RULES
     1. The deadline for essay submissions is 11:59pm (PT) on May 1, 2016.
     2. Students must provide a copy of their full-time schedule to confirm eligibility.
     3. Essays must be written on the topic noted above, and must be an original essay.
     4. One essay per student.
     5. Essays should be no fewer than 800 words and no more than 1,600 words.
     6. Essays must be typewritten, double-spaced.  All citations to factual data should be noted in the
         footnote or in a References page.
     7. Cover page should include student’s name, address, phone number and email.

PRIZES
The Sandra Imprescia Essay Scholarship Committee will review essays to determine the top three.  IAPMO’s Board of Directors will select and announce essay contest winners by August 2016.  Prizes will be awarded as follows

First Place – one winner

  • $1,000
  • Publication of essay in Official and at IAPMO web site
  • One year IAPMO membership

Second Place – one winner

  • $750
  • Publication of essay in Official and at IAPMO web site

Third Place – one winner

  • $500
  • Publication of essay in Official and at IAPMO web site

LM Scholarship Program

Details:

  • Be enrolled in a diploma or degree program by September.
  • Have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Write an essay answering a specific question.
  • Be a US resident or Canadian resident.

Mission Creek Orthodontics Scholarships

Details:

  • Attending college or university no later than December 2016.
  • Be attending college or university on a full-time basis by December 2016.
  • Submit an answer to the essay question.
    • The year is 2016.  You have been asked to buy a toy for an 8-year-old child in the local elementary school.  Your only guidelines are the following:
      • The toy must no require power to operate.
      • The toy must help the child develop a skills that is beneficial in an educational environment.  For example, many studies suggest a correlation between spatial skills and early interaction with toy blocks, such as Legos.  Good spatial ability is essential in engineering, physics, math and computer science.
  • Be in your last year of high school or a freshman, sophomore, or junior in college/university.

Horatio Alger Association: Honouring Excellence Integrity and Perseverance

The Horatio Alger Association of Canada provides $650,000 annually in need-based scholarship support for deserving students in all Canadian provinces and territories. Scholarships of up to $10,000 are awarded to full-time students in their terminal year of high school with financial need (family income under $55,000) who have demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity, a commitment to pursue a post-secondary education, a desire to contribute to society, and a good academic record.

Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award

BBG provides the Youth Volunteer Scholarship Award to recognize and reward a student who demonstrates a passion for volunteering, while maintaining a high level of academic achievement.

  • Over the past 2 years a student must have completed a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer work.
  • Over the past 2 years a student must have maintained a GPA of 3.5 or greater.
  • A student must be under the age of 21 years of age on the day of the deadline.
  • A student must submit an essay on the topic prior to the deadline.

Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association – Junior Citizen of the Year

Junior Citizen of the Year

The Junior Citizen of the Year award has honoured the youth of Saskatchewan for the past 38 years. The program is sponsored by The Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, in partnership with SaskPower, and the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan. 

These prestigious awards are given to kids who:

  • Have a positive lifestyle
  • Are dedicated to community and school
  • Have a strong sense of caring and responsibility
  • Have the ability to overcome life’s challenges
  • Inspire others
  • Are between ages 8 to 18

Four award recipients are chosen each year and receive a $3,000 bursary provided by SaskPower to be used for their post-secondary education.
