The CCOHS Council of Governors established this scholarship fund in 2002 in the memory of Dick Martin, a tireless health and safety advocate and a pioneer of workplace health and safety in Canada.
Awarded annually, this $3,000 national scholarship is available to any student enrolled, either full-time or part-time, in an occupational health and safety related course or program leading to an occupational health and safety certificate, diploma or degree at an accredited college or university in Canada. Programs include mine safety, occupational or industrial health and safety, industrial hygiene, safety management or other related safety degree program.
To apply for the award, post secondary students are invited to submit a 1,000-1,200 word essay, cover letter and completed online application form.

John Evans, P.Eng was a Director and Vice-President of the Foundation, a committed supporter of women in engineering and a CEMF scholarship judge. His legacy included a donation for an award to be made to a young Canadian woman entering an accredited engineering program in Canada from high school and it is not based on academic achievement. This $5,000 award also includes a potential summer engineering work placement opportunity with Fortis Inc. at one of their Canadian utilities, after your second or third year of study.

- Possess Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency Status
- Be a high school graduate, entering into an accredited Canadian Engineering program

FCM’s scholarship program for secondary school students began in 2010. There are five awards of $1000, each, with one award to be presented in each of the five regions of Canada (British Columbia, The Prairies and Territories, Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic Canada).
The scholarship is open to female students enrolled in any year of study in secondary school and who are contributing to their school’s leadership team or student council.

One (1) scholarship of $1,000, to be awarded in each of the following regions:
- British Columbia
- Prairies and Territories
- Ontario
- Quebec
- Atlantic Canada
Qualifications
The scholarship is open to female Canadian citizens currently enrolled in any year of study at a Canadian secondary school or CEGEP.
Submissions
Your submission must include the following elements.
- In a 3 min video, tell us how you contribute to school activities related to student council or leadership.
- Provide a written document with answers to the following questions. Each answer should be 300 words or less.
- How do you contribute to your school’s leadership?
- How are you engaged in community activities?
- Why is it important for women to participate in politics?
Note that FCM will keep all applications meeting eligibility criteria on file for future consideration. Video entries may be used to promote FCM’s scholarship and awards program. Candidates will be notified prior to use of the video.
References
Two written references are required:
- One (1) personal reference (i.e. friend or relative)
- One (1) academic reference (i.e. teacher or principal)
